So, today there will be the first article that will be devoted to survival in the city during emergencies of a nuclear and other nature. Emergency situations (hereinafter referred to as emergencies) in the city can be divided into several parts. This is, in fact, an emergency with the use of nuclear weapons or toxic substances and without the use of them. That is, we are analyzing the worst option - war. Our valiant country has been attacked (by whom, it doesn’t matter) and we are actually defending ourselves. To begin with, I would like to analyze the situation with the use of nuclear weapons. To begin with, let's take a superficial look at the damaging factors of a nuclear explosion. The main factors in a nuclear disaster are:
- light radiation
- penetrating radiation
- shock wave
- radioactive contamination.
- electromagnetic pulse (EMP).
Radiation has a detrimental effect on an unprotected person, but is greatly reduced when passing through concrete, soil, etc. material. It is especially weakened when passing through lead itself or its chemical compounds. Light radiation can ignite flammable materials, damage the retina or cause burns (extremely rare). The shock wave as such does not have a harmful effect on a person, but splinters and fragments of building materials, such as facing tiles, billboards, etc., can harm him (the person). and so on.
Radioactive contamination occurs due to radioactive particles released into the atmosphere. Falling as precipitation (rain, snow), it causes contamination of the area, depending on how far you are from the epicenter of a nuclear explosion. When a nuclear bomb explodes in the upper layers of the atmosphere, EMP-ElectroMagnetic Radiation occurs - unshielded equipment will no longer work.
Being in a contaminated area for a long time, a person acquires ionizing radiation, or simply radiation. With low exposure it is possible:
- general mild malaise
- pain in the lower abdomen.
With stronger radiation there will be pain, but not in the stomach, but throughout the body. In case of strong radiation:
- digestive disorders
- hallucinations
- loss of consciousness.
When the dose received is more than 50 roentgens, the brain dies and you are dead.
What to do in this situation?
What to do, you ask? And here comes another and important factor - time. When they tell you that they want to use nuclear weapons against you. There are two options here. Usually, before using weapons of mass destruction, the state issues an ultimatum. In such cases, the media notify the population about current affairs. The Ministry of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense services are organizing the evacuation of the population to more remote areas. For the most part, they will not do this, but will save the government, officials, and rich guys. The turn of the population will not come soon to the middle class, as well as to the poor.
If the situation is unclear, then you can play it safe. You should gather all your family and friends, pack your things (an emergency backpack, things to protect against radiation) and leave for the village or dacha. It is best if the village or dacha is located far from large cities (100-150 kilometers is normal), and also if there are no strategic objects nearby.
The wilderness, without light, water, normal access to it, and most importantly, without the military, this is the best option. No one will spend expensive missiles and bombs, especially those with nuclear filling. And here there are still two options - either you will have time to leave on time, or you will not have time and the city will be encircled. A city in a ring is very scary. The food and water there will run out VERY soon, people will appear who will want to take this very food from you, and not by very “good” methods.
What to take with you
If you want to leave, you must not leave empty-handed. It’s better to take a smaller weapon, you don’t need to carry a machine gun, if it’s a machine gun, then it’s better to AKS74U (you can exchange it from traffic cops and police), or remove it from a cold corpse. Don’t be disdainful, looting is your way to survive and get vital equipment, or shotguns - TOZ-106 or Saiga in 20 caliber - are the smallest and officially approved models.
You also need a secondary weapon - a pistol . It is still advisable not to use a trauma weapon, but something like a PM - for a running caliber (there will be no problems with cartridges).
Clothing - it’s better not to wear camouflage, but you also need to have it in your backpack. For shoes - ankle boots, or sneakers or sneakers. Lots of socks. Take food and water for a week. It is important to take food that is not too spoiled, but also convenient to eat - for example, you don’t need to carry potatoes. Some of the water is in flasks, some in bottles. You must have protective equipment (gas mask or respirator and safety glasses) and a first aid kit. Medicines for personal illnesses, painkillers, antipyretics, antibiotics, antihistamines, stomach remedies, more bandages, cotton wool, something anti-radiation).
Also take factory-folded first aid kits - for example AI-4 or IMZ (only in Ukraine there is one). It would be useful to have a supply of alcohol in flasks (wine, vodka or whiskey). Well, and other small things, like matches, etc..
In addition, you should have an additional bag that fits close to your body - it duplicates the main backpack. We wrote about choosing a backpack here. There are some cartridges (perhaps, because they will be the main currency), scans of documents and a supply of food and water - for the day (a couple of doshiraki, Snickers, a can of stew - here put not a large 500 gram, but a smaller one and a small bottle of water - 0, 5 liters). It is also important to take with you separately, wherever you want, even in shorts, all the jewelry you find. This is your happy life. Gold and jewelry are a currency that will never depreciate.
Cover the backpack with a white sheet and secure it to it. You can also sew strips of red fabric on the sheet with a cross. This is necessary so that any BB gunner who spots you (and there will be many of them, and don’t even hope to go unnoticed in the city) sees that you are a CIVILIAN and does not decide to shoot you. You will be guided through the sights and you will move on. Of course, you are not walking along the coast with your wife, but there is no need to do somersaults ala Stallone in Rimbaud - they will herd you and shoot you because they will not understand who you are and what you are. The shock wave as such does not have a harmful effect on humans
The pressure difference in the wave front causes barotrauma and concussion to a person.
Shock pressure drop (shock wave front), starting from a third of the atmosphere - concussion, bleeding from the ears and mouth. About half of the atmosphere - ruptures of internal organs, damage to bones, dislocations of joints. Above - damage to the entire body that is incompatible with life. The art of survival. Chapter 3.8: Survival in the Urban Jungle
We, dreamers, dreamed, suffocating in cities, About distant bright distances, about foreign lands. R. Kipling
You can become an outcast due to a misunderstanding with the law (we do not allow conflict!), a clash with a gang, a natural disaster, or chronic unemployment. Don’t despair: in the wonderful world of homeless people (people “without a fixed abode”) there are masters of survival who wander through the urban jungle for years. In modern cities there are a sufficient number of secluded corners and waste resources not only for the masses of stray dogs and cats, but also for a certain number of degenerate people. Like animals, these people divide the exploited territory among themselves and fight to defend the borders. Their greatest concentration is near train stations and markets.

Previously, the word “scourge” was used in approximately the same sense.
The content of the article
Cloth
Since you will often have to sleep without undressing, wear clothes that are not afraid of wrinkles (knitted, denim, bolognese). Avoid wearing light-colored clothing, as dirt will be more visible on them. Preferred colors: black, gray, brown, green protective shades.
To make sure law enforcement officers cling to you less, maintain a decent appearance: wear a tie, clean your shoes, etc. You should always have a small shoe brush and shoe polish with you.
The umbrella weighs a lot and does not protect against the cold. The raincoat is too heavy and attracts attention. In case of rain, it is better to just stock up on a raincoat. It is also useful to acquire a thin, waterproof suit made from bologna fabric. It can be worn over other clothes in case of rain, and can also be used in dry weather. It weighs little and folds compactly.
You should have several pairs of spare socks, panties, and handkerchiefs. In winter, it is better to use a knitted tracksuit as an insulating layer under outerwear. Try to make it look decent: you may have to use it as your main clothing somewhere on a train, hotel or holding cell.
Keep some light shoes (for example, sneakers) in stock that can be worn indoors instead of slippers, and can also be worn outdoors if your main shoes get wet.
You can dry your washed clothes on the go by hanging them inside a fabric bag. For this purpose, it is better to choose a black bag, since wet spots are less visible on it.
Nutrition
Due to difficulty brushing your teeth, it is best to avoid sugary foods. A product like dryers or crackers is the best source of carbohydrates: it doesn’t spoil, you don’t need to cut it, you can eat it on the go. Bread cut into pieces and dried (but not to the point of breadcrumbs) is convenient. The danger of eating crackers is that you can scratch the mucous membrane in your mouth.
For storing water, a flexible flask is preferable: you can squeeze the air out of it, and there will be no splashes from your bag.
To provide minimal food, it is enough to find and hand over 3-4 glass bottles to the collection point. This is quite a feasible job for one day.
If the portion of food you have is not sufficient, then in order to suffer less from hunger, it is better to eat it not in one meal, but in two, separating them by several hours. Hunger interferes with sleep, so if there is a shortage of food, it is more profitable to eat it mainly at dinner rather than at breakfast.
If food is stale or contaminated, you should not eat it in large quantities and drink plenty of water: a high concentration of gastric juice will ensure partial disinfection of this food in the stomach. If you can choose what to eat first - clean bread or poorly washed berries, you must choose the latter. A couple of hours after eating low-quality food (when it has already left the stomach into the intestines), you need to drink more water in order to quickly rid the body of toxins.
If gastric juice, when it is impossible to satisfy hunger, is released into an empty stomach, you can eventually get an ulcer. To dilute this juice to a safe concentration, drink plenty of warm water. But this, in turn, will force you to often look for a toilet or a secluded corner.
When there is nothing to wash down food with, you need to keep portions of it in your mouth longer in order to moisten it more abundantly with saliva. In general, you should not swallow food that is not crushed enough and has not been kept in the mouth for long. Even when there is something to drink, and the food does not need to be chewed (for example, porridge), soaking it with saliva is still required, since saliva contains the enzyme amylase, which ensures the digestion of carbohydrates.
Water use
If you eat non-dehydrated foods, then in cool weather, 0.5 liters of water in a flask will be enough for a day. Of this, 0.2 liters can be spent on brushing your teeth, washing your toothbrush, and washing your face.
You can disinfect water by adding potassium permanganate (to taste), or iodine (2 drops of a 5% solution per liter), or dry wine (1/2 volume of water). The last method is applicable only if the wine is not fake.
To speed up the precipitation of sediment when disinfecting water with iodine, you need to add a little salt to it. After adding salt, standing for 20 minutes is sufficient.
For health, it is recommended to drink plenty of water. You should not drink a lot in three cases:
- if it is difficult to find a latrine;
- if water is bad or in short supply;
- if diarrhea is expected.
The art of drinking when water or hiding places are scarce is to keep yourself on the brink of thirst. If there is a lack of water, sweating should be carefully avoided.
Cleansing
To wash yourself, 0.1 liter of water is enough. To wash completely and with soap, 8 liters of water are enough. If it is not possible to wash, you should at least wipe your body with a damp cloth.
The skin has a significant ability to self-cleanse. Moreover, frequent washing with soap is harmful to the skin, as it leaves it without protective fatty lubricant. Some peoples (for example, the Mongols) did not wash at all during the classical period of their existence.
The accumulation of dirt on the body continues only until it is balanced by the process of self-cleaning. For many people, the level of balance may be quite acceptable, in other words, without excessive odor. Self-cleaning of the skin is carried out partly due to the transfer of dirt to clothing, that is, updating the underwear layer of clothing to some extent replaces washing. There is very little self-cleaning of clothing. A partial replacement for washing is shaking out and frying (in the sun, near the fire).
Human skin is constantly renewed. The outer worn-out layer is peeling off, and it is necessary to help remove it in those places where this does not happen quickly enough on its own: once a day, wipe the skin between the toes and comb your head (if not with a massage brush, then with a comb or at least your nails), and also once Clean your belly button every week. Some peoples who roamed dry steppes and deserts, i.e., in conditions of scarcity of water, developed the custom of circumcision. If you are not circumcised, you should wipe the area daily and/or keep the skin pulled back.
Instead of washing your face, you can wipe your face with lotion.
You can shave without water at all: get a shaving cream that you can leave on the skin, or use an aftershave cream (or some other cosmetic cream) instead. If there is no cream, then as a last resort you should moisten the skin with saliva before shaving.
If your facial skin is oily, then acne poses a threat. Touch your face less with dirty hands. You should also carry a mirror, a bottle of cologne, a box of cotton wool in your pocket and check and correct your appearance a couple of times a day.
To avoid washing your hands, you need to get them dirty less. Wear gloves or distribute functions between your hands so that one of your hands always remains clean (do not use it to handle door handles, handrails in vehicles, money, etc.).
An alternative to washing dishes is to thoroughly dry them with a paper towel.
You can wash your clothes in a bathhouse, carry them in a plastic bag before settling in for the night, and hang them out next to your bed to dry at night.
Make sure your feet don't sweat. Sweaty feet can lead to the growth of skin fungi on the feet. To suppress fungi, lubricate your feet with zinc ointment.
As for the handkerchief , it can be universal. Keep it neatly folded. Use the outer surface for drying hands and holding hot objects. The surface of the first spread is for cleansing the nose. The inner surfaces are for wiping your lips and wiping your face with lotion.
Rest
The wandering life is very tiring, at least at first - until you get used to it. And overwork will make you vulnerable to illness. To avoid this, take every opportunity to sit down and relax. In transport, give way only to pregnant women and one-legged people.
Relax in cinemas, canteens, hair salon lobbies and similar public places (it is not recommended to linger in the waiting room at a train station, as you can quickly become familiar to the police).
Walking for a long time can cause pain in your feet. Massage them before bed. If you're planning a big trek into the urban jungle, exercise your legs with long walks if possible.
Dispatch of natural necessities
“Besides your weapon you must have a spatula; and when you sit outside the camp, dig a hole with it, and cover your excrement with it again.” Old Testament, book of Deuteronomy (23.13)
It is not always possible to use an outdoor toilet. There are accessible free toilets in institutes, clinics, and open institutions such as newspaper editorial offices. You can also wash your face and stock up on water there.
We must try to maintain regular bowel movements. This allows you to arrive in a timely manner where bowel movements can be carried out without problems. In order for the intestines to empty regularly, it is necessary not only that the food is of good quality, but also that the main part of it is taken every day at approximately the same time. In addition, in order for the intestines to request a bowel movement on time, it is necessary to focus favorable attention on it, because if you are afraid of the inconveniences associated with bowel movements, this delays the necessary process.
A sign of impending diarrhea may be thirst (due to the lack of absorption of water in the rectum.) If there is reason to seriously fear diarrhea, it is better to radically reduce water consumption.
While performing your natural needs, try not to spoil the environment. Traces of your activities should be hidden if possible (sprinkled with earth, etc.). This will allow you to visit the same place again and again, and also, among other things, will save you from aggressive attacks from regular and volunteer law enforcement officers. And this is especially recommended if it happens near your temporary shelter.
If you are settling down for the night in a room without “conveniences,” then as a last resort you can urinate in a bottle, and for other needs use a jar or box.
Asylum
Finding a woman with an apartment for the night in half a day is easily possible only in adventurous films. Even if a woman pays attention to you, she may have boyfriends, relatives, children, sexually transmitted diseases, as well as criminal accomplices. So you shouldn’t rely on this method of solving the problem (but you need to be mentally and financially prepared for it).
If you have an undistinguished, ordinary appearance, a modest suit and little money, lower your expectations. Your destiny is an ugly woman over 35 or some kind of alcoholic or drug addict. To get to know a woman, you need to approach her with a question that allows you to try to involve her in a conversation. If a woman supports your attempt, then in her eyes you deserve attention. It must be taken into account that some women are not interested in men at all. In order not to waste time on such people, you need to choose for courtship only those who show curiosity about you and in whom there is a noticeable desire to please.
Look for a degraded woman in a proletarian area near a beer stall or a piece department. You need a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of alcohol.
If chance hasn't sent you a single woman with an apartment, the following will also work for an overnight stay:
- An area in the hallway in front of the attic entrance in some old houses. Learn to determine its internal structure by the appearance of the house, so as not to needlessly climb under the roof again.
- The area in front of the door leading to the elevator motor - in some new houses. True, to protect against tramps and youth, access to such areas is usually closed with a lattice door and a lock is hung, so it is better to carry a metal saw with you.
- Old house being restored .
- Unfinished house.
- A secluded place in the park under the bushes.
- Underground heating main box (access is through the hatch; to lift the hatch, you need to stock up on a small hook that can be inserted into the hole in the hatch, which is intended for just this purpose).
- Coach . At large railway stations there are places where cars are parked. All carriage doors are opened with the same “carriage key” - a triangular tube placed on the triangular pin of the lock. If you foresee a transition to a wandering life, make yourself such a key.
For overnight stays, choose houses away from the train stations, since there are plenty of tramps near the train stations without you, the entrances smell bad, and the residents are especially hostile towards strangers. In areas frequented by vagrants, homeowners usually install locks on their entryway doors.
As for the heating main, it is sometimes possible to determine its location by surface signs: after rain, the ground above it (asphalt) dries out earlier; in winter, the snow and ice above it are thinner or completely absent. Moving along the heating main, sooner or later you will find a hatch. On heating mains you come across very cozy boxes in which you can live. The danger is mainly from rats. They can attack the sleeping person.
These animals need food, so if there are no objects such as garbage dumps or grocery stores nearby, then there are unlikely to be rats.
Look for a place to stay overnight in advance. During the cold season, it is important that your shelter has a heat source - a radiator or a heating pipe. While the time between shops closing and going to bed is spent at the movies or on a park bench.
Plastic film can be used to protect against cold and rain only for a short time (a few hours) or provided that the space underneath is more or less ventilated. Otherwise, a lot of water will condense underneath. If, for example, you put a large plastic bag on top of your sleeping bag, then by morning the sleeping bag will become damp from your body evaporation.
Instead of a sleeping bag, you can carry more clothes with you, a foam mat, and also a piece of plastic film measuring about 100 by 200 cm to lay under the mat. (On a particularly cold day, you can use a mat and film in addition to clothing: wrap it around your body.) The clothes you will sleep in should not be afraid of wrinkles. Knitted suits are very comfortable. To pack spare clothes tightly, you need to roll them tightly and tie each bundle with a cord.
The body should be soft in just a few points during sleep.
If you sleep on your side:
- under your head,
- under the shoulder,
- under the ribs,
- under the pelvis.
If you sleep on your back:
- under your head,
- under the spine
- under the pelvis,
- under the shoulder blades.
A rolled-up raincoat or a strip of foam rubber measuring approximately 40 by 100 cm is suitable as a soft bedding. To prevent the bedding from getting dirty, you can lay newspapers or plastic film underneath it.
It gets colder in the morning, so have a reserve of warm clothes to throw on in the middle of the night.
If hunger prevents you from falling asleep, drink plenty of water and lie on your left side. Water will not be able to flow from the stomach into the intestines and will create a feeling of fullness.
The main danger for those spending the night in unsuitable places is other tramps. They can attack the sleeping person or rob him. It is necessary, firstly, to barricade yourself if possible, secondly, keep a weapon at hand (in your pocket or under the edge of the bedding - so that it will not be pulled out while you are sleeping), thirdly, prepare some kind of alarm devices that will wake you up you with noise.
You can get out into the countryside in the evening and occupy someone’s haystack, hayloft or empty house for the night.
Sleeping in the cold
At 25 degrees and no wind, you can probably sleep without clothes and without a blanket. But you will need to cover yourself with about one additional layer of fabric for every 3 degrees the temperature decreases.
Take care of the minimum surface area of your bed (less surface means less heat loss). If you don't have a sleeping bag, wrap yourself in at least a piece of plastic wrap. The sleeping position should be taken in such a way that the parts of the body are pressed against one another. It is very important to cover your head. It is also necessary to warm your feet. If your feet are warm, then it’s easier to convince yourself that your whole body is warm. Replacing one layer of fabric by instilling a state of thermal comfort is feasible for anyone.
Three thin shirts are warmer than one triple-thick shirt. If there is not enough clothing, you can wrap the body under the top layer of clothing with newspapers. You can make cutouts for the arms and head in a large plastic bag and wear it like a tank top (but not on your naked body).
If you feel cold while sleeping and have nothing else to wear, warm up with squats, then try to nap for another 30 minutes until you feel cold again.
Caches
If you have more things than you can easily carry with you, you will have to find some place to store the excess. This could be an automatic storage locker at a train station. The inconvenience of this solution is that it requires some expenditure of money, and in addition, you can become familiar with the transport police.
You can hide things under bushes in the park. The danger is that they can be discovered by children, strays or dogs. To ward off strangers, defecate on the approaches to your hiding place or use ready-made protection of this kind.
Items of primary use
“I carry everything that’s mine with me.” Socrates
If you have to carry all your property with you, the problem arises of conveniently placing it in such a way that retrieving the things you need at the moment does not require a long rummage in the bag.
The following items should be available first
- knife, flask;
- compass, map, money;
- plastic bags;
- iodine, cologne, bandage, mirror, cotton wool, handkerchief;
- soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper;
- matches or lighter, flashlight;
- notepad and ballpoint pen.
Plastic bags should be divided into 4 groups, stored separately:
- new (never used);
- from bread and similar products;
- clean, but not so clean as to put bread in them;
- needing washing.
