You need to decide on the volume of your backpack. It depends on the purpose, duration of the hike, as well as on the physical characteristics of the tourist himself. So, the volume:
Up to 60 liters . These backpacks are suitable for short hikes in simple hiking conditions. In addition, small compact backpacks are popular among fragile girls.
60-90 liters . This is a mid-range backpack; these backpacks are universal and suitable for any type of hike.
80-120 liters . This volume is suitable for long difficult hikes or simply for tall people.
Backpack volume: so that everything fits and it doesn’t turn out to be half empty
To make the backpack comfortable to carry, it must be tightly stuffed at least to a level just below the beginning of the tube - the “pipe” at the top. For example, if your backpack is 100 liters, and you have half of it filled with things, it will be inconvenient. It is better to take a smaller backpack - 60 - 70 liters.
The tube and side ties allow you to change the volume of the backpack, but within a third. If you do not fill the tube completely and at the same time tighten the ties, you can reduce the volume by a maximum of 25 - 30%. But not half. Therefore, do not choose a backpack with a large reserve of volume.
Those who go hiking more or less often usually have not one backpack, but a pair. Not counting the small one of 25 - 35 liters, which is called a “sandwich bottle”. This one fits a minimum of things: a thermos, water, a mat, a burner and sandwiches - hence the name.
There is no uniform method for calculating the volume of a backpack; it differs among different equipment manufacturers. It is important to look at whether the total volume is calculated with or without pockets: the total volume of pockets can be 20 liters, this is significant.
In PIK-99 we do not take into account the volume of pockets.
The choice of backpack volume depends on the duration of the trip. The difference is big if the supply of food and clothing is needed for 2 - 3 days and if for 1.5 - 2 weeks. Also look at the weather: on a summer hike you can take a light and compact sleeping bag, but in the fall when hunting or going to the mountains you need a warm sleeping bag and spare warm clothes, which require a larger backpack.
If you are going camping with a group, leave room in your backpack for common equipment, which is usually shared among everyone: a group tent, boilers, fuel, supplies, etc.
Based on experience, we can give the following recommendations for choosing the size of a backpack for an adult:
a one-night hike in the warm season - you can get by with a small backpack (“sandwich bag”) of 35 liters. If you walk close, the tent is carried in your hands, and the rug is fastened to the bottom of the backpack;
short hike with 2 – 3 nights – 60 – 80 l;
for hikes lasting a week or more, men take backpacks of 80–110 liters, women – 60–80 liters;
accommodation in a permanent camp - you need more space than for a hiking trip in order to take all the necessary things and settle down comfortably. For a man, take a backpack with a volume of approximately 100 liters, for a woman - 80 - 90 liters;
rafting, self-propelled hike with a large supply of food, ski trip, carrying some special equipment - 120 liters or more.
The volume of your backpack is also affected by your clothing size: if you wear size 56, your sleeping bag will be larger than that of someone who wears size 44. Accordingly, clothes will take up more space.
Decide what type of travel backpack you need. According to the suspension system, there are three main types:
Easel , the basis of which is a rigid frame with a suspension system. Such backpacks can easily withstand heavy loads and distribute the weight evenly, but a rigid frame greatly increases the weight of the backpack itself.
Semi-stationary , which are the most popular choice among tourists, due to their relative lightness. The basis of half-stack tourist backpacks includes vertical metal or plastic tubes, which provide ease of carrying things.
Soft , the rigidity of which ensures the correct order of folded things. These are popular among light vehicles because they weigh little.
Types of travel backpacks:
According to their design, tourist backpacks come in three main types: easel, semi-easel and soft.
Easel tourist backpack:
The easel tourist backpack is based on a rigid metal frame, to which the straps and the tourist backpack . The main advantage of easel tourist backpacks is that the weight of the load in it is distributed evenly and the person walks with a straight back. It doesn’t matter at all what, how and in what volume is in a tourist backpack - the weight of the cargo will still be distributed equally. An easel backpack for a hike is indispensable when you need to carry a very heavy and inconvenient load on relatively flat terrain. But the easel tourist backpack also has significant disadvantages: often the rigid frame causes discomformation, the weight of the tourist backpack itself is increased, and also in some cases, a tourist backpack of this type is less durable - the fastenings of the tourist backpack can come off the frame, breakage and bending of the machine itself, in this case, it is unlikely to be repaired in field conditions. Currently, a limited number of such models are produced. backpacks for beginner tourists .
Soft travel backpack:
Soft, “ordinary” tourist backpacks have the largest number of design options, which boil down to differences in fabric, back, straps, their width and methods of fastening, belt, etc. Such tourist backpacks are the cheapest and lightest; when empty, they fold compactly, but soft tourist backpacks are the most sensitive to packing: if not packed correctly, such a tourist backpack will cause a lot of trouble for the tourist when carrying it.
Semi-stationary tourist backpacks (anatomical, semi-rigid, frame, “anatomists”) have vertical inserts in the back made of metal or plastic strips or tubes representing a rigid frame. At the same time, all the main disadvantages of a machine-made tourist backpack are eliminated, but the effectiveness of such a frame is less than that of a machine-made one. The design of an anatomical tourist backpack is quite convenient when packing a tourist backpack and carrying cargo in it. Travel backpacks of this type are somewhat more expensive than soft travel backpacks and are slightly heavier. The main advantage of such a travel backpack is the even distribution of weight and a straight back when carrying loads. Semi-stationary (anatomical) tourist backpacks , along with soft tourist backpacks, are the most common.
In the future, the article will only talk about anatomical and soft tourist backpacks!
Peculiarities
Don’t forget about the parameters that influence the choice of a high-quality and comfortable travel backpack.
Pockets, carbines . With the help of them you can arrange a huge number of different little things that will be useful to you along the way. You don't have to waste time and effort turning over your entire backpack in order to find some small thing like a glass or knife.
Weight . This indicator determines whether you can handle a tourist backpack when traveling long distances.
Fabric, accessories, ties . The quality of materials of a tourist backpack must be as high as possible, reliable, all seams are made in a conscientious manner.
Water resistance . The fabric of backpacks usually has moisture protection, but not one hundred percent. For special cases, some backpacks provide an external protective cover. If the cover is not included, it can be purchased separately. An indicator of quality is a double seam, which ideally is additionally taped.
Number of compartments . Small backpacks usually have 1 compartment. Medium and large have 2 compartments. The bottom compartment usually has a separate zippered access.
Color . Among other things, pay attention to the color of the backpack. Sometimes this can be an important point, for example, when searching for lost people or simply for a collective reference point on a joint hike. The brighter the backpack, the more visible you are.

Equipment can make or break your vacation. Good camping gear is essential if you want to travel around the country for several days in a row and enjoy yourself! A good backpack is definitely the first investment you should consider before heading out on the trail. Having tried a wide variety of hiking backpacks in the past, from Ospreys to cheap Quechuas, I've rounded up the 10 must-have features of a hiking accessory.
What to look for before purchasing?
In hiking conditions, a backpack is a very important item. That is why it must be suitable, of high quality and meet the specific needs of its owner. Before purchasing a hiking backpack, you need to pay attention to the following nuances:
What is it made of, and how high quality is the material used;
The quality of the seams - they must be smooth and strong, and with smooth and sharp jerks in different directions they must not crack or come apart;
Size – it should fit all the items and things necessary for the trip;
The presence of a sufficient number of compartments that will provide easy access to the necessary small things;
Versatility - the backpack should be such that there is no need to take additional bags or specialized carriers;
Things from the backpack should be easily and easily removed;
Transformation capabilities;
Availability of sufficient ventilation in the area of the shoulders and back;
The presence of a special protective cover provides protection from dirt and rain.
Backpack volume
With some skill, you can fit all the necessary things into even the most compact backpack. But often, with compact sizes, all bulky items cling to the outside of the bag, which does not make it convenient during a hike. Therefore, the choice of volume should be approached responsibly. It should be borne in mind that a backpack that is too large has certain disadvantages. For example, there is a temptation to put a large number of things in it that will make it too heavy to carry.
When choosing a volume, consider the following features:
to go outdoors on weekends, a person of average build only needs to purchase a hiking backpack with a volume of 45 to 60 liters;
for cross-country hiking lasting more than a week, backpacks with a volume of 80 to 130 liters for men and 65 to 80 liters for women are best suited;
for hiking in the mountains, it is recommended to purchase backpacks for men from 100 to 110 liters, and for women - from 65 to 80 liters;
for skiing or water trips, you should take care of having a hiking backpack for men with a volume of 130 liters or more, and for women it will be enough to buy a backpack with a volume of 80 to 100 liters.
As for weight, this indicator should be determined depending on the weight and physique of the tourist.
Material
Before purchasing a hiking backpack, you need to pay attention to the material from which it is made. To ensure that the backpack is of high quality and does not cause discomfort while wearing, preference should be given to those in the production of which high-quality materials are used.
Modern high-quality backpacks are made from reliable materials that are durable, lightweight and do not rot.
When choosing a backpack, you should definitely give preference to the most practical, versatile and convenient. In this case, you need to rely on your gender, as well as the conditions under which you plan to use it. Only by making the right choice will there be no negative impact on health, and all the things you need on a hike will fit in it.
Availability of pockets and additional functions
When choosing a backpack for hiking and traveling, you should also pay close attention to the presence of pockets and additional functions. They can greatly simplify life during a hike.
The valve is a top lock that provides unobstructed access to the main compartment. In addition, this element helps protect the backpack from moisture penetration.
Additional pockets can help out during a hike; you can put the necessary parts in them.
Compression straps are located on the sides and are intended to secure additional equipment.
External loops and fastenings will be indispensable for attaching additional equipment, mainly mountaineering.
Protection from rain is also considered an important function. Almost all modern backpacks produced by reputable companies are equipped with this function.
You shouldn't rush into choosing a backpack. You need to approach the process responsibly. The more convenient the backpack is, the more comfortable the traveler will feel during the hike.
#1: Fully Adjustable Suspension System
Each person has a different body structure. One is tall and thin, the other is short and wide, or vice versa. Good backpacks should adapt to any body structure.
The first thing I look for in a hiking backpack is a fully adjustable harness. You should be able to move the base that the shoulder straps are attached to up or down depending on your torso length.
expeditionary Thule Guidepost 85L
You should be able to control the width of the structure by moving the straps in or out to adjust their position on your shoulders.
You want a hip belt that sits comfortably on your hips and moves with your gait.
The chest strap should move up and down along the guides on the shoulder straps and be adjusted in length.
The ideal hiking backpack fits your back like a glove fits your hands. Even when fully loaded, 60% of the weight from the shoulders is transferred to the hips, which means the torso is not as tired while walking.

Some manufacturers (Osprey, Gregory, Black Diamond) produce backpacks with several sizes within the same model. The size guide is tied to the length of the torso - from the 7th cervical vertebra to the ilium.

Essential elements
Let's move on to what components of a backpack it is important to pay attention to when purchasing.
Materials and quality of tailoring. First of all, it’s worth looking at what the backpack is . Today, the most common materials for travel backpacks are Cordura and Oxford. Be sure to check the reliability of the seams.
Belt and straps. It is also worth paying attention to the belt. Its function is to take on most of the weight of the backpack, thereby relieving the load on your shoulders. The belt should be wide enough and soft, but at the same time keep its shape. The same can be said about the backpack straps; they should be wide and thick, not cutting into the shoulders. It is important that the length of the waist belt and shoulder straps can be adjusted. I would like to draw the attention of MirSovetov readers to the fact that many backpacks have a floating strap fastening system; it allows you to adjust the backpack to your height, which is convenient. Models of tourist backpacks are available for women and men. The design of the women's model allows the backpack to fit more comfortably on a woman's figure, the straps on such a backpack are closer to each other, and the waist belt can take on a little more weight.
The presence of additional pockets and pendants. Almost all modern backpacks have a flap on top; it is very convenient for storing various small items. For example, there may be a windbreaker, a map, or something for a snack; during the journey, all this can be easily obtained without disassembling the backpack .
Sometimes the total volume of a backpack is divided into two compartments: the upper one is slightly larger, the lower one is slightly smaller. The lower compartment is often also called the “mouse hole”. You can also put something there that you need every day, for example, a sleeping bag. It is also convenient to have pockets on the sides of the backpack; you can put a foam mat or a bottle of water in them, securing them with special ties. an ice ax can be attached to them . The presence of a rain cover in the kit is not guaranteed, but it is definitely a useful thing. But if necessary, you can buy it separately.
Travel backpack material.
The fabric from which a travel backpack must be strong enough and dense, wear-resistant, moisture-resistant and dirt-resistant, but not too heavy. The most acceptable synthetic fabrics today are “ cordura ” , “ oxford( oxford) and a number of other fabrics. Often the fabric of a tourist backpack comes in a textured checkered pattern - approximately every 5-8 mm there is a thickened thread for better wear resistance of the material. On the inside they are covered with a waterproof coating, which, however, does not protect the contents of a tourist backpack from heavy rain. Fabrics such as the domestic “avizent” and a number of other thin fabrics (as on sports city backpacks) sometimes turn out to be not reliable enough. It’s good if the bottom of the travel backpack is made of denser and waterproof fabric than the sides (or from the same fabric in several layers).
Seams of a tourist backpack.
The seams of a tourist backpack should be double stitched (or covered with tape) with nylon thread. Overlock processing (stitching like knitwear, in cheap models) can do a disservice, since in this case the fabric often begins to fray after a year or two and the travel backpack simply comes apart at the seams. It’s especially disappointing if this happens during a long trip, because it’s very difficult to repair in field conditions.
The shape of a tourist backpack.
It is more convenient when the bottom of a tourist backpack is oval rather than rectangular. Sometimes they make backpacks . They are, as a rule, more spacious, but less comfortable if you insert a karemat (tourist foam mat) inside. A tourist backpack can end at the top with a tube with an additional lid - a valve (1) with buckle locks or a lid with a zipper (like a suitcase). Covers protect the backpack from rain. The valve is very convenient for storing essential items, both inside the valve itself and under it (when the straps on which the valve is held press some bulky item to the tourist backpack itself, which should be at hand, or simply does not fit into the tourist backpack ), for example, it is very convenient to fasten a warm puffer jacket under the flap on a ski route (no need to reach into a tourist backpack , it is always at hand, easy to get during a rest), etc. There is also a separate advantage of the valve of a tourist backpack: very often the valve of a tourist backpack is unfastened and the straps sewn to it are connected together, thus creating a small backpack (such as a city one) - this is an irreplaceable thing for small radial trips - you don’t need to drag a large tourist backpack , but at the same time it is possible to carry a small number of items (be it, for example, a snack, thermos , jacket , etc.)
The back of a tourist backpack.
The back of a travel backpack can have different thicknesses depending on the number and material of the inserts. The purpose of such a design is to protect the back from a carelessly packed tourist backpack , often to remove sweat and more evenly distribute the load on the back. Ideally, for this purpose, there should be vertical wide elastic pads in the back. Sometimes, instead, there is a solid foam insert (this is worse!) or there is no padding at all, and the back consists only of the fabric of a travel backpack (this option is highly not recommended!). Many modern models of semi-stationary tourist backpacks (“anatomists”) use the so-called floating suspension or a floating system for fastening the straps on the back. This allows you to adjust the travel backpack to your specific figure. IT IS VERY COMFORTABLE! The most common option is to secure it with double Velcro to a series of parallel horizontal slings. Each manufacturer's system may have different variations and names, but the essence is the same.
Travel backpack straps.
The straps of a travel backpack should be quite thick and soft from the inside. Straps made from one layer of foam will quickly wrinkle and begin to dig into your shoulders. The shape of the straps can be straight, crescent or S-shaped. Straight straps do not allow you to move your arms freely. The straps should be neither narrow nor too wide. For the average person, the optimal width is 6-7 cm, tapering towards the bottom. The fastening of the straps must be strictly according to height, even if the tourist backpack has a floating suspension (see above). The straps on top should fit snugly to the backpack and not wobble. The upper guys for the straps (2), which pull the upper part of the tourist backpack towards the back, are mandatory (they are almost always there).
Tourist backpack - chest strap.
The chest strap on tourist backpacks should hold the straps, preventing them from falling off the shoulders to the sides and more securely fixing the tourist backpack on the back. However, if the travel backpack is selected correctly for your height, you will not need it. But it has a very significant drawback - it compresses the chest when inhaling. As they say, not for everyone!
Travel backpack belt.
The presence of a comfortable waist belt (“waist belt”, weight belt) (7) in a tourist backpack is a mandatory requirement. The waist belt takes up to 50% of the weight of the travel backpack from the shoulders and back and redistributes it to the hips, and also prevents the travel backpack from fidgeting on your back. The belt should be softly padded on the inside, quite wide (at least 10 cm), but not too wide so as not to interfere with walking and, most importantly, when putting on a tourist backpack, it should fit on the waist, and not on the butt. The belt should fit tightly on you when wearing a tourist backpack over one T-shirt. It’s convenient when there are side pulls from the waist belt - this helps to better adjust the belt both for a T-shirt in the summer and for thick winter clothes. Tourist backpacks without a waist belt are now almost never produced (except perhaps for the cheapest models), but if you see them on sale, don’t buy them! A buckle (8) of the “self-release” or “trident” type must be placed on the belt, which can be easily unfastened with one hand for safety reasons! Pictures of these types of buckles are shown on the right. As a rule, trident type buckles PLEASE NOTE: The lap belt buckle is the most common item to break, sometimes they have to be replaced several times a year. And if it breaks during a hike and there is no replacement, it’s not very pleasant. Therefore, after purchasing a tourist backpack, don’t be lazy, go to store and buy two or three of these buckles (they are very cheap in the city, but are practically priceless on a hike) and put them in the pocket of the tourist backpack - it won’t be superfluous!
Fastening the straps of a tourist backpack.
The method of attaching the straps to the bottom of the backpack is very important. It is recommended that they are attached not at the corners at the bottom, but higher in the area of the waist belt through a special scarf. In this case, the coverage of the torso is better and the load distribution of the tourist backpack is better.
The lumbar pillow (6) is a useful thing - a hump on the tourist backpack in the area of the waist belt, which prevents the tourist backpack from sliding down, allows you to significantly relieve the straps and load the belt. It’s better when it’s made not from foam rubber, but from the same foam.
Travel backpack - flaps and pockets.
The presence of a pocket in the valve (lid) of a tourist backpack is mandatory (more details about the advantages of the valve are described above). A compass , cape, knife , field diary, etc. are placed here The presence of a small pocket for documents inside the flap is very convenient. But keep in mind: the valve is most sensitive to precipitation (during rain or wet snow, the valve gets wet first and the most), so when storing documents in the valve, do not be lazy to wrap them in plastic. For example, I was once lazy and lost my passport during the rain! But the presence of pockets on the sides and back of a travel backpack is not for everyone. Yes, it is convenient, but it also has its drawbacks: with very full pockets, it is not convenient to put a tourist backpack in trunks, on narrow third shelves of cars and to fit into public transport with it. In this case, hanging detachable pockets are convenient. Sometimes there are small pockets on the waist where you can put keys, pocket money and other small items. However, do not forget that many pockets mean additional weight.
Loops, slings, rings, elastic bands, nets and other accessories on the outside of a tourist backpack.
External suspension in the form of loops, slings, rings, etc. on the outer surface of a tourist backpack, straps - this is also not an acquired taste. As a rule, they are very convenient, but many people do without them. Some people have them on their travel backpacks, but they don’t use them. In fact, they are very functional - you can use them to attach rolled up mats ( mats ), awnings (especially when they are wet), ropes, mugs, crampons, ice axes , carabiners and other hardware, etc. At the same time, they are easily accessible and do not tear a tourist backpack . To prevent long objects (for example, a hammer) attached to the sides of a travel backpack from jumping out, there are often support pockets at the bottom. The rings on the straps are convenient for carrying a camera, walkie-talkie, or resting your hands, for which special loops are sometimes provided.
The lower compartment of a tourist backpack.
The lower compartment (“bomb bay”, “mouse hole”) is actually not very functional. If a backpack is inserted in a circle into a tourist backpack, then it is still impossible to use the lower “hole” in the tourist backpack. If there is no rug, then it is also difficult to easily pull out the necessary thing, and even more difficult to put it in place. In addition, after removing the item from the bomb bay, the tourist backpack , refuses to stand at all. In general, the thing is not for everyone. For example, I prefer travel backpacks without them.
Side straps of a tourist backpack.
The presence of side tension straps (5) is mandatory. They allow you to adjust the volume of a tourist backpack by 2 or more times and the tourist backpack will never look like a bag, it will always keep its shape. However, they practically lose their meaning if a karemat (tourist foam mat) is inserted in a circle inside a tourist backpack - with whatever diameter the karemat is pulled together, this will be the diameter of the tourist backpack . Also, side straps are indispensable when transporting thin and long oversized items: alpenstock, ski poles, skis when hiking, etc. In this case, the straps are loosened, the necessary objects are inserted under them and then tightened again. The shape and convenience of the tourist backpack itself will not change, but you will relieve your hands of excess weight.
Handles on a tourist backpack.
For the convenience of putting on a tourist backpack or loading it into a vehicle, there must be at least two handles One of them is usually located above the straps, and the other on the opposite side. Handles can also be on the sides.
#2: External Quick Access Pockets
The next feature is related to effective packaging. When I pack for a camping trip, I break it down into three categories:
things I need at night, such as a tent, sleeping bag, toiletries and spare sets of clothes;
things I might need during the day such as a burner, food and snacks, extra warm layers, spare camera batteries, etc.;
Things I need quick access to all day: rain gear, maps, wading shoes, first aid kit, sun cream and toilet paper.
5.11 Rush 72 from the movie “Annihilation” The ideal hiking backpack has external pockets for storing things that are needed here and now (for example, it’s starting to rain).

Tired of carrying a backpack on your shoulder? You can quickly turn this backpack into a rolling suitcase. It also has additional top pockets, a large opening compartment and a removable backpack.
#3: Separate bottom compartment and access to it
The best way to pack a backpack to relieve unnecessary stress on your back is to place your bulkiest and least used items at the bottom and place heavier items such as food, tent and water towards your back.
With top-loading backpacks, it is difficult to effectively use all the space in the bottom of the backpack. That's why I like backpacks with a separate bottom compartment and its own access. This way I can add a few lightweight items in there when space is limited upstairs.
Homemade backpacks
Separately, it is worth mentioning homemade backpacks and custom-made designer backpacks. Leave the opportunity to sew and produce backpacks to large manufacturers: it is easier for them to replace or repair, and in addition, they can afford to test models and develop new ones. The private owner is limited in funds: due to the “non-brand” nature, he is forced to reduce the price, which attracts buyers, or vice versa, such production may be more expensive due to the difference between the wholesale and retail costs of materials for the production of backpacks. However, the author of these lines spent a couple of years hiking in the Crimea with a backpack from the “author”, which he was pleased with, but the truth was until he tried a backpack from the “brand” - it was much more convenient.
Summary:
When choosing a backpack for a hike, take a backpack with a guarantee and from a trusted company. Do not take a backpack by hand, especially if you do not know which one you need.
#4: External belts and cables
I usually try not to attach too much stuff to the outside of the pack because it makes it harder for me to control my center of gravity. However, I still want to be able to hang socks, t-shirts or a towel outside to dry when it's sunny. Or attach a solar panel to charge the battery during the day.
I like backpacks with external straps and loops - even if I don't use them often, I want to know I'll be able to do so in case of an emergency.
Packing a backpack
After choosing and purchasing a backpack, most likely you will still have to assemble it - also not an easy task, especially if you are doing this for the first time in your life. Try to place heavy items closer to the bottom and back of the backpack. Experienced hikers usually pack their backpack in a lying position. This will bring the center of gravity closer to you, and the backpack will not weigh down. In addition, many things can be placed much more compactly. Another tip: be sure to put all your things in bags, you can even take 5-10 spares with you. Will they help your things stay dry during heavy rain, will they be useful for packing groceries after dinner... as practice shows, they are never superfluous!
#5: Ventilation
As a rule, there is little space for air between the backpack and the back, so in the heat the back sweats wildly. To avoid this, the backpack must have a ventilation system in the form of air channels. The best option for me is the mesh.

How to properly try on and buy a backpack in a store
The choice of backpack for hiking has been made, now all that remains is to purchase it. The ideal purchase option is to check a specific model on a hike. By borrowing a backpack from friends or renting it, within a few days in the mountains you will know for sure how suitable it is for you. And when you return to the city, you simply buy the same model in the store. Otherwise, the backpack doesn’t fit or you haven’t been on a hike, take a tourist friend with you and together choose what you need. If you don’t have such friends, it doesn’t matter! After all, most sales assistants in tourist stores are people who have been to the mountains more than once. They will help you choose the best option, taking into account your height and body proportions.
Of course, on the forums there is a lot of information about choosing a backpack and descriptions of different models. Selecting a backpack successfully remotely takes a lot of time and is very difficult to do.
#6: Internal hydration compartment
Although I always carry a water bottle with me while hiking, my main source of water is a 3-liter hydration system that I keep in the main compartment of my backpack.
Practical backpacks for trekking should have a separate place for a hydration pack in the main compartment - this gives confidence that the water bag will not be damaged and things will not get wet. There should also be a small hole on the side of the backpack so that the tube can come out and reach over the shoulder to the clamp on the chest.
Backpacks for hiking in the mountains
Backpack for hiking in the mountains An experienced mountain traveler chooses an assault backpack. This is a small structure with hanging systems. Their volume is 20-50 liters, they are very durable, made of fabric resistant to external influences and mechanical damage, with a minimum number of pockets, duffel bags. In accordance with the specifics of mountain hiking, backpacks have a streamlined shape with a minimum of protruding parts. Often models for mountain climbing are equipped with a system for drinking water using a straw coming from the backpack. Summarizing the characteristics of what a backpack should be like for short-term or long-term climbing in the mountains, we can say: it should be a backpack made of especially durable material, small in volume, light in weight, as comfortable as possible, so as not to catch the edges on rocks and attach all the necessary equipment to external fastenings.
A separate group is worth highlighting backpacks for freeriders and back-country lovers, whose goal is not only to climb the mountain, but also to descend it on skis or snowboards. The main difference between these backpacks is the presence of characteristic design elements: the presence of special pockets and compartments for a ski mask, an avalanche probe, a snow shovel, an avalanche beeper, and a first aid kit. An important element of a freeride backpack is special back protection.
#7: Spacious pocket on the waist belt
Remember when your phone was so tiny that you could fit it in one of those little pockets on your backpack with the waist straps? Yes, those days are gone. I want my hiking backpack to have a spacious pocket on the hip belt. It should fit the size of my phone and ideally be able to fit something else in it.
Since the hip belt pocket is not usually protected by the backpack's rain cover, it must be waterproof.
Best Tactical Backpacks

#8: Detachable small backpack
After I've set up my tent, I sometimes want to explore the surrounding area a couple of kilometers away, but I don't want to carry the whole backpack with me.
I love that when hiking the backpack has a removable top flap that turns into a small radial backpack or sling. This allows me to carry essentials with me when I roam outside of camp.
For example, my Thule Versant 60L looks like this.
Its lid turns into a sling where I can put a bottle, jacket, sun cream and go for a walk.
Determining the volume of a tourist backpack:
The volume of tourist backpacks is measured in liters and ranges from 60 to 150. How to choose the right volume?
First you need to decide on a few things:
Timing of the trip. How long are you going on the hike? Will it be weekend tripforest or a month spent on the glaciers of Elbrus?
Type of hike. Will it be on foot, horseback, water or mountain trekking?
Age, gender and physical fitness of the tourist.
Based on this, you can calculate the dimensions of the future backpack, or, in professional terms, the volume. The volume of tourist backpacks is measured in liters. For an adult tourist going on a hike for a couple of days, a 40-liter backpack will be quite enough. While for a long hike it is better to look for a backpack of 60 liters or more. As a rule, for a long hike, the average volume of a women’s backpack is 60-70 liters, and a men’s backpack is 80-90 liters. If the hikeequipment is required .
As a rule, it is recommended to use the following volumes: For schoolchildren - 60-70 liters. For girls - 80-100 liters. For men - 100-120. If it seems too big to you, it’s worth remembering that you can always tighten it with straps (making a 120-liter tourist backpack into 80 liters). It should also be taken into account that if you are used to wearing a karemat (tourist foam mat) inside a tourist backpack, it will “eat up” about 5-10 liters of volume due to the tourist backpack not fully matching the shape of the cylinder.
If you buy a tourist backpack , it may happen that you will have to hang some of your equipment outside or carry a city backpack (“kangaroo”) on your chest, which is not good, or carry something in your hands, which is completely bad. But you should also not buy a tourist backpack that is too large (otherwise you will always find something to put in it and the tourist backpack will be too heavy).
#10: Built-in rain cover
Some manufacturers squeeze and save on this important element, although it costs a penny. We're talking about protection from rain.
If you need to buy a separate rain cover, make sure it completely covers your entire backpack. Ideally there should be cutouts for installation above the waist belt.
Do you want to master new distances or set another personal record? Or are you just a beginner who has just embarked on the path of active independent tourism without the usual benefits of civilization? In any case, when choosing a hiking backpack, be careful and serious at the time of choice. A good sporting goods store will have bag-shaped weights in the backpack section so you can gauge the fit with different weights. Be sure to walk around the hall with them.
