Therefore, do not choose a backpack with a large reserve of volume.

Those who go hiking more or less often usually have not one backpack, but a pair. Not counting the small one of 25 - 35 liters, which is called a “sandwich bottle”. This one fits a minimum of things: a thermos, water, a mat, a burner and sandwiches - hence the name.

There is no uniform method for calculating the volume of a backpack; it differs among different equipment manufacturers. It is important to look at whether the total volume is calculated with or without pockets: the total volume of pockets can be 20 liters, this is significant.

The choice of backpack volume depends on the duration of the trip. The difference is big if the supply of food and clothing is needed for 2 - 3 days and if for 1.5 - 2 weeks. If you are going camping with a group, leave room in your backpack for common equipment, which is usually shared among everyone: a group tent, boilers, fuel, supplies, etc.

Based on experience, we can give the following recommendations for choosing the size of a backpack for an adult:

• a one-night hike in the warm season - you can get by with a small backpack (“sandwich bag”) of 35 liters. If you walk close, the tent is carried in your hands, and the rug is fastened to the bottom of the backpack;
• short hike with 2 – 3 nights – 60 – 80 l;
• for hikes lasting a week or more, men take backpacks of 80–110 liters, women – 60–80 liters;
• accommodation in a permanent camp - you need more space than for a hiking trip in order to take all the necessary things and settle down comfortably. For a man, take a backpack with a volume of approximately 100 liters, for a woman - 80 - 90 liters;
• rafting, self-propelled hike with a large supply of food, ski trip, carrying some special equipment - 120 liters or more.

The volume of your backpack is also affected by your clothing size: if you wear size 56, your sleeping bag will be larger than that of someone who wears size 44. Accordingly, clothes will take up more space.
